In recent years, Jon Kralbert of Stanford University and his colleagues have published many papers on mathematical studies of the approximation of wave equations. Although their work is firmly oriented towards the application of exploration seismology, it appears that the geophysical industry lacks enthusiasm for the experimentation and realization of these technologies in routine data processing. We are convinced that geophysical information that is to be extracted to the maximum extent possible by seismic data ultimately depends on the use of wave equations and we consider it desirable to introduce a development program.
