The accurate quantification of HIV-1 DNA and RNA in cells and bodily fluids by PCR is now considered as an important means of investigating the efficacy of HIV-1 pathogenic and antiretroviral drugs. Several researchers initially used semi-quantitative PCR to detect HIVDNA and RNA levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and plasma but failed to control the reverse transcription and DNA amplification efficiency of each sample.
