对敦煌莫高窟风沙危害的分析表明,本区现实的风沙危害主要是来自鸣沙山沙物质所形成的戈壁风沙流,而沙山及其前缘小沙丘的移动对洞窟威胁不大.窟顶戈壁带不仅是一个天然输沙场,而且是阻止沙山和前缘小沙丘向窟区移动埋压的天然屏障.由此提出要保护莫高窟免遭风沙危害不是防治沙丘前移而是戈壁风沙流.为此,应在沙山前缘采取阻、固沙措施,不能在戈壁区设立任何阻沙工程,以免引沙入窟.
