According to the U.S. Army Technology website, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and Alcoa are working together on a one-piece aluminum alloy bodywork to enhance the vehicle’s protection against IED threats. The body is currently the largest in the world and plans to replace the bodywork of active ground-based combat vehicles to ensure higher strength and longer life. At present, the bodies of service vehicles are formed by welding several metal armor plates together to form the car body structure. Such welds often become weak areas and become sensitive to detonations. Kay Klimer, Alcoa’s executive vice president, said the company has developed innovative long-life and lightweight aluminum alloys. Researchers are currently studying the world’s largest IED anti-tank body, a single body structure will not use the welding armor. The company plans to use advanced absorbing detonation of the alloy, to further enhance the body structure damage
