In Britain, Christmas and Good Friday (the literal meaning of these holy days) have become holidays for religious reasons since Christianity became a national religion. Britain celebrated Christmas on December 25, while several other European countries celebrated on Christmas Eve. Other public holidays include Easter Monday, New Year’s Eve, Spring Break (the last Monday in May), summer holidays (the last Monday in August), Boxiny Day on December 26, and New Year . The term “Bank Holi-day” dates back to the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, during which time all banks were closed for rest and the name was given on public holidays.
