The Yangtze River Delta is located in the junction of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Coastal Economic Belt. It is one of the most developed and the most active core areas in China. The Yangtze River Delta has a narrow and broad sense. The narrow sense of the Yangtze River Delta region is a concept of an urban agglomeration, mainly referring to Shanghai, Ningbo, Huzhou, Jiaxing, and Ningbo which are centered on Shanghai and include Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, Nantong, Shaoxing, Zhoushan and Taizhou, covering an area of 100,000 square kilometers of 16 urban areas. The region has been recognized as one of the six largest urban belt in the world. As far as the law of regional economic development is concerned, the Yangtze River Delta is entering a new round of economic development at a higher level. In particular, the success of Shanghai in bidding for the 2010 World Expo marks a brand new opportunity for development in the Yangtze River Delta with Shanghai as its center. The construction of venues, transportation, urban construction and tourism in the Expo will not be possible without the cooperation in the Yangtze River Delta. Therefore, how to grasp this good opportunity, integrate and optimize various resources and realize the mutual benefit and win-win situation of the Yangtze River Delta regional economy is an important issue we need to study now.
