The global market for functional foods is about 3.3 billion U.S. dollars and the European market is about 200 million U.S. dollars, accounting for less than 1% of the European food market turnover. In 1999, sales of key products for functional, functional foods in Europe amounted to approximately $ 135 million. The profits of many multinational food companies increased with sales of functional foods. A small number of small and midsize companies survive or follow the path of imitation. Nutritional studies show that functional foods that have long-term success must rely on product development and sales.
