Objective To investigate the relationship between serum levels of trace elements (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) in patients with primary retinal pigment epithelium (RP) Methods The contents of Zn, Cu, Fe, Ca and Mg in 26 RP patients were determined by PE5000 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results Serum levels of Zn and Cu in RP patients were significantly lower than those in physiological values, with significant differences. Serum Fe, Ca content than the physiological value increased, the difference was significant. Mg content and physiological values no significant difference. Conclusion The incidence of RP may be related to the abnormal metabolism of Zn and Cu in Zn, Cu, Fe and Ca, especially in Zn and Cu.
