A brief history The history of international income comparisons began in 1688 with Gregory King’s comparison of Britain, the Netherlands and France. According to gold estimates, the United Kingdom has about the same average income per capita as the Netherlands, while France is almost a quarter lower. (Although there was not a large market for publications on the topic at the time, Kim’s book was not even published, but was later disseminated through the writings of Charles Davanese.) His method of valuing the value of France and the Netherlands was not clearly articulated; the best guess seems to be his multiplication of the various products in the country and the Netherlands (in particular, the consumer goods to which he has come to determine his income) using the pound price.
