Aircraft suppliers respond to rapidly changing productivity by innovating manufacturing technologies, taking on new tasks and increasing efficiency. One such supplier, Kurt Manufuringuring Co, Minneapolis, MN, has implemented the use of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) for the production of piston-driven aircraft engine crankcases. Maximize the flexibility in this system - the same ease of handling a large engine crankcase is as small as a maneuver. There are a total of 24 different types of crankcase, which are produced quickly with minimal modification and effort. To ensure the highest level of quality, every tool, operation and part is tracked by the computer from start to finish. This system uses a tool management system and inspection software package to prevent errors that may occur during normal machining operations. This is designed to reduce processing time and increase maximum flexibility of production.
