POLDER (Polarization and Directivity of Earth’s Reflectance) instrument is a wide field-of-view radiometer designed to measure the polarization and directivity of solar radiation reflected by the Earth’s atmospheric system in the visible and infrared spectral regions. POLDER’s original instrument concept observes the ability of any target passed through the instrument swath at 13 different viewing angles. For each view, the target is imaged in eight narrow spectral bands, three of which are at three different polarization angles. POLDER’s multi-mission scientific goals pose harsh radiometric and geometrical requirements: This article describes the POLDER, the characteristics of the instrument, and the pre-flight performance measured on the flight model. The POLDER, developed by CNES, is installed on the Advanced Earth Observation Satellite (ADEOS) platform developed by the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) of Japan’s Space Agency. The satellite will be launched in August 1996.
