Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) refers to the epithelial cells under certain physiological and pathological conditions to the phenomenon of stromal cells. In the process, epithelial cells lose their original features and gain the functions and characteristics of interstitial cells, thereby enhancing the ability of the cells to move and metastasize. Therefore, the occurrence of EMT can increase tumor invasion and metastasis. When cancer cells reach distant metastases, mesenchymal transition (MET) can occur in the reverse direction. As this transient process is over, the tumor cells will regain the epithelial character.
