Cholesterol is a predominant steroid within the parasite tissue, but many parasites do not synthesize it and must obtain it from the host. Cholesterol and other lipids in plasma lipoproteins are used by parasites that colonize the vasculature and parasites that extravascularly acquire plasma-like components. From this, we speculate that the parasite has evolved a variety of lipoprotein receptors through convergent evolution. In the discussion, the authors provide evidence of mammalian parasitic protozoan and parasitic worm lipoprotein receptors.
