The mechanism of chronic latent infection of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is unknown. The authors speculate that the downregulation of RANTES, a proinflammatory chemokine, leads to the decrease of monocyte aggregation in the inflammatory area. For this reason, the authors inactivate HCMV with ultraviolet light (UV), but retain the ability to bind and internalize. UV-treated HCMV (UV-HCMV) acts on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to form an abortive, early-infected cell model.
