Lichtzwang, a collection of poems published by the German Jewish poet Paul Celan in 1970, continues the obscure and fragmented nature of the Sprachgitter (1959) Out of the poet’s painful state of existence and longing for death. The poem “Mantis”, though short in its length, displays the constant theme of Oedipus and death in a fractured language. Celan’s desire to die of his mother’s love and pray for his exchange with the deceased mother runs through his poetic history (Wu JG, 2010: 8). This article tries to use the method of textual self-explanatory hermeneutics to complete the processing of the ruptured and broken images in the poem “Mantis”, trying to interpret the secrets of Celan to her mother.
