For many years, L-thyroxine was commonly used to treat iodine deficiency goiter. The reason for this treatment is that it suppresses the secretion of TSH in the pituitary gland. TSH is thought to be the main substance that stimulates thyroid gland growth. However, in the past few years, many in vitro and in vivo studies have further enriched the concept of pathophysiology of thyroid gland growth and provided that the reduction of iodine content within the thyroid is clearly the most important causative agent of delayed cell growth. TSH stimulates the cells themselves to hypertrophy, but does not affect the number of cells. Based on these data, people think that in theory
