For many reasons, surface acoustic wave filters have not hitherto been widely used in mobile radio devices. This article gives a brief overview of the history of receiver architectures and introduces two receiver system designs that take full advantage of the performance of a surface acoustic wave filter: a secondary variable frequency super-heterodyne portable radio receiver and a synchronous broadcast receiver.
