Objective: To determine the serum levels of angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (BaPWV) in patients with essential hypertension and to explore the relationship between serum AngⅡ level and arterial stiffness in patients with essential hypertension. Methods: Fifty patients with essential hypertension were selected as the observation group. Fifty healthy subjects were selected as the control group during the same period. The concentration of serum AngII was measured by double antibody sandwich ELISA and the BaPWV was measured by arteriosclerosis diagnostic apparatus. Results: The levels of blood pressure, BaPWV and serum AngⅡ in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P <0.05). The levels of serum AngⅡ in the BaPWV group were significantly higher than those in the normal control group and BaPWV group (P <0.05). There was a positive correlation between BaPWV and AngⅡ, SBP and DBP (r = 0.528,0.586,0.459, P <0.05). Conclusion: AngⅡ level is closely related to the occurrence and development of arterial stiffness in hypertensive patients.
