Type 1 diabetes is characterized by islet beta cell destruction, and cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of islet beta cell injury. Cytokines induce the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX) -2, resulting in increased levels of prostaglandin E2, which exert cytostatic and toxic effects on pancreatic β-cells, resulting in β-cell damage. The study also found that high levels of COX-2 gene expression and the occurrence of diabetic complications are closely related. The study of the mechanism of COX-2 involved in islet β cell injury may provide new measures for the prevention and treatment of type 1 diabetes.
