随着工业生产的发展,资本主义国家的社会产业结构正在发生着变化,总的趋势是直接从事物质生产的人员数目和物质生产占国民生产总值中的比例逐步减少,而从事服务性行业的人员数目以及此种行业在国民生产总值的比例逐步增加,1969年美国服务性行业的从业人员比例已高达61.1%,其生产总值已达整个国民生产总值的60.4%。根据1969年巴黎“经济合作和发展组织”的统计,1969年西欧和美国国民经济各部门从业人员和国民生产总值的分布情况如下:
