This article explores the issue of Chinese identity in Bai Xianyong’s New Yorker series. Most of the American Chinese under the early Bai Xianyong’s writings have not really become naturalized. The author’s Chinese writing has never been detached from the historical perspective of modern China and is devoted to describing the anxiety of recognition between Chinese imagination and American imagination by overseas Chinese. In recent years, however, his writing has focused on the exploration of human nature. In particular, the marginalized homosexuals have been deeply concerned by Bai Xianyong. His recent works characterize the theme of human communication, especially love can transcend racial boundaries, but this theme does not mean that the author gave up the expression of Chinese complex.
