This paper presents an object-oriented approach that effectively supports VLSI design, which includes data management and tool control. It uses a data model (called the DTO model) to sculpt a design object and is uniquely identified by four basic parameters (design object class, design methodology, history version, equivalent view). In order to describe the design method, a Design Method Extension Description Language (DMEL) that describes the features of tools has been developed. The design event stack is used for the control of tools to implement a dynamic design flow scheduling mechanism (DDFS). The DTO model, combined with DDFS, successfully provides the most important capabilities that the Design Support Framework should have: data transparency and consistency maintenance, version control, data hierarchy and multidimensional view descriptions, and automatic control of the design process. Based on the above ideas, an integrated framework that supports the automatic design of gate arrays has been successfully developed, which shows good characteristics in the actual chip design.
