Three cross-channel start-up vocabularies were tested to explore the role of tonal information in semantic activation in Chinese auditory vocabulary processing. Experiments one and two use two-syllable words (such as “treaties” and “jumps”) that have the same information of the same section but different tonal information as auditory initiators and double words that have a semantic relationship with one of the words as visual probe words . The tone mismatch between the semantic start and its counterpart differs in the pitch of the first syllable, the pitch of the second syllable, or both tones. Experiment 3 changed the tone of the first or second syllable of the semantic start-up word to generate the unvoiced pseudo-start item. Experiment three also changed the similarity between the original tone and the generated tone. Experimental results show that whether tone-mismatched start-up items have a significant start-up effect depends on the context of the vocabulary competition, the degree of match between tone input and deep tone representation, and the location of mismatched tones. The article discusses the findings from three aspects: how to activate vocabularies in phonetic input, how to store tonal information in mental lexicon, and how the restrictive effect of tone on semantic activation is affected by competitive environment
