In spite of the economic recession and the rise in U.S. dollar prices compared to European currencies, the Western European laser market has grown by a factor of two since 1980. Manufacturers have increased by 40%, and some lasers have moved from the laboratory to the commodity stage. Compared with sales of 217 million U.S. dollars in 1982, the total amount in 1983 was just over 300 million U.S. dollars, compared with only 153 million U.S. dollars in 1980. West Germany accounted for 34% of the total, the United Kingdom 24%, France 19%. In the United Kingdom and West Germany, foreign wholesalers (mainly the United States) have slightly higher sales than local manufacturers, but French manufacturers’ sales are higher than their imports.
