This paper studies the effective sensitization of silver halide to nonplanar dyes. It has been thought in the past that many non-planar quinoline dyes lack spectral sensitization, but this twisted, simple cyanine is a good sensitizer to silver halide from two typical experiments of imidazole heterocyclic dyes. Brooker et al. Believe that the spatial planarity of the dye has an effect on the spectral absorption of the solution. Symmetrical dyes due to space congestion, the absorption spectrum shifted to long waves, and showed low extinction. Wavelength changes and extinction changes showed a linear relationship.
