An aerospace and aviation official told the electro-optical system and technology conference in Los Angeles that important advances in optical manufacturing technology are needed before high-energy laser systems become operational weapons systems. Peter O’Clark of TRW’s defense and space systems group said there is a need to develop fast, low-cost manufacturing of large-scale, high-energy laser optics and the fabrication of mirrors and mirror coatings. Although high-energy laser optical systems, like other electro-optical systems, face many of the same development problems. However, high-energy lasers have their own unique needs due to the huge physical size of their components, as well as the requirements of beam quality and power density.
