Prior to the war of resistance against Japan, Singapore’s Kallang Road (commonly known as the City of Fire) was the site of the fire saw industry. There were more than 10 fire saw factories (wood processing factories) employing a total of more than 1,000 workers. In the fire sawing factory, pipe sawing sawed less workers engaged in technical work, at the time it was called internal work and wages were on a piece-rate basis.
