One of the major causes of tympanoplasty failure is eustachian tube dysfunction. The authors trace various methods of measuring the pressure at the eustachian mouth and introduce a simple instrument for estimating the pressure on the eustachian mouth. The instrument consists of a standard sphygmomanometer. A “T” tube is inserted between the pressure gauge and the rubber tube for inflating the balloon. The end of the third branch is connected to an earplug suitable for insertion into the external auditory meatus. When using the air pressure slowly increased, the doctor observed the sphygmomanometer reading until the pressure suddenly dropped (ie, eustachian tube opening pressure), when the patient felt the air through the ears and into the nasopharynx.
