北宋沈括(1031-1095),以自然科学上的创见和成就称著于世,论者亦往往着眼于此,而对他在文艺和美学方面的见地评论较少。然而他在乐律、诗词、绘画、书法、文章等方面都有极深的造诣,提出了不少精湛的见解。在《梦溪笔谈》(包括《笔谈》、《续笔谈》、《佚文》~①中涉及文学、艺术的就不下120条,占全书六分之一强;尽管这此条文以随感形式表达,未形成系统,但比较深刻地触及到某些艺术创作的客观规律,对那些流传于世的有关艺术的神秘主义和粗陋的审美评价作了有力有的批判。从总体上说他的艺术观贯彻了朴素唯物主义的辨证思想,具有较高的理论价值,值得今人借鉴。
