第一次世界大战爆发后,原属同盟国的意大利宣布中立,并利用中立地位在两大集团间寻求自己利益的最大化。在英国的主导下,协约国与意大利秘密签署《伦敦条约》,将大量原属奥匈帝国的领土许诺给意大利。在“伦敦密约”签署的过程中英国一方面利用土耳其海峡问题力促俄国接受意大利的参战条件,另一方面试图利用意大利制约俄国战后在地中海的影响。
After the outbreak of World War I, Italy, an allied country, declared neutrality and used its neutral position to seek the maximization of its own interests among the two major groups. Under British rule, the Allies signed a “Treaty of London” secretly with Italy and promised a large number of territories originally belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Italy. During the signing of “London Compact ”, Britain on the one hand made use of the issue of the “Strait of Turkey” to urge Russia to accept the terms of the war in Italy and on the other hand tried to use Italy to restrain the Russian influence in the Mediterranean after the war.
