Robert Creelli, the representative of the cast poetry, believes that language should not, at first, denote it, but should be self-sufficient. His view of language inherits the viewpoints of his predecessors such as Pound, Williams, and Zhukovsky on the physical characteristics of language itself. However, he rejects the practice of expressing meaning through imagery and makes the language point out to itself instead of the object. Creeley’s linguistic view has an important influence on later linguistic poets. Linguistic poets in theory inherited Creole “language that things” point of view, in practice, also followed many of Creole techniques. But linguistic poets are more extreme than Korili in exploring the language’s self-sufficiency. They try to cut off the connection between language and reality, and their poetry is therefore more self-sufficient and more obscure.
