苗女事件在1982至1983年间,田世信创作的《苗女》在北京中国美术馆首次公开亮相,这件作品以夸张的处理方式打破了“唱赞歌”的传统形式,具有极强表现性。同时,它的出现也引起了贵州省一批苗族知识分子的尖锐批评,这场争论最初只是发生在文艺界的,围绕着“美丑”问题而展开。但是,陋着时间的推移,这场争论很快越过学术争论的界限,演变成一场来自省内各地苗族社会强烈的声讨活动,最终变成了一场政治上的声讨。
