The United States established a factory for the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) in the early 1950s and the Wecco plant (now Kerr McGee) was producing 10 tonnes at that time. As the U.S. troops invaded North Korea, Japan accepted orders for a large number of high-performance batteries in the United States and started to produce EMDs. In 1963, the annual output of EMD in Japan was 10,000 tons, up to 40,000 tons in 1970, accounting for 75% of the total output of the world at that time. From 1978 to 1980, the world’s major countries and factories producing EMD had an annual growth rate of 10%.
