This article uses the U.S. Bureau of Social Security’s wage micro-panel data from 1937 to 2004 to analyze the evolution of U.S. income inequality and liquidity. Unequal annual income inequality graph was U-shaped, dropped sharply from 1937 to 1953, then steady growth. Short-term liquidity, except for a brief, sharp increase during World War II, remained steady throughout the sample period. In fact, the increase in the annualized (logarithmic) annualized income in 1970-2004 was due to an increase in the variance of fixed wages (corresponding to temporary wages).
