China’s capital Beijing is usually haunted by the
haze in the spring and autumn, giving people the impression of smoky and blurry sky in the city. That made people who are not familiar with that area spontaneously think lowly of the area around Beijing. This is a misguided opinion, as there is a green paradise in less than 300 kilometers away from Beijing.
This place is called Bashang Grassland. Located in Fengning, Hebei, the grassland is 350 square kilometers in the area and 285 kilometers away from Beijing. It is the closest natural steppe to Beijing and thus is called the No. 1 Steppe to the North of Beijing.
This grassland is a part of the grand Inner Mongolia Grasslands. Like the rest of the broader grassland, this piece of land also boasts the crystal-like waters, abundant green grass, and hordes of oxen and sheep. Its name in Mongolian just means “abundance in water and excellence in sight”.
This No. 1 grassland has the average altitude of 1487 meters. The height alone gives this place an imposing sight as the blue sky seems to be blending in the green land. Its latitude also gives it a unique sight to behold – as the typical grassland in the temperate zone, this land sees many windy days and a long winter. However, it has a cool summer and the highest temperature here is not higher than 24 degrees.

The beautiful scenes and the mild temperature made Bashang Grassland an ideal place for leisure travel. Its charm was noted by people a long time ago. In the Qing Dynasty, this place used to be the hunting field for the royals and nobles of the empire. They would like to ride in there while hunting deer, foxes and other wild animals that could be seen everywhere. In July and August, the said best time of Bashang Grassland, the emperor would come to the hunting field with his huge entourage. The grand green land crawling with hustling horses and elegantly-clad people were definitely a sight to behold. Being royal thus was one of the most primary features of this area.
However, modern people seemed to have forgotten this royal place after the destruction of the Qing Dynasty. The tourism value of Bashang Grassland was deserted for a long time while this land was mainly used for breeding of livestock. This was not changed until the 1990s when people from Beijing accidentally re-found the charm of this place. From then on the beauty of Bashang Grassland was put into use again and the scene of hustling people gradually found its way back to this area. With the increasing sense of environmental protection, there are no longer hunting campaigns there, but the nokilling-animals part, namely the riding, still remains interesting and poses a great appeal to tourists. People from Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei would like spend 3-4 hours driving there on their leaves for an exciting holiday on the horse back. Therefore, they can experience how the ancient people lived, traveled and hunted (they do not need to use bows or other weapons to kill anything, though).
If you are a green hand in riding, there are professional coaches you can hire to help learn of riding fast. Still you need to be reminded that riding horses is dangerous and not suitable for every one. If it is really out of your hand, you’d better drop it.
Though it is a pity that you cannot ride in Bashang Grassland, there are a lot of other places or things that can make you feel less piteous, maybe even better.
   Thousand Pine Dam Forest Park
It is located in the northwest of Fengning County and the southeast of Bashang Grassland. It is one of the youngest scenic spots in this area, but it has become charming enough to attract bunch of tourists. This Forest Park consists of several small forests that grow on the grassland. It could represent the best combination of forests and grassland. There the two different kinds of green colors meet each other on the half way and co-exist with each other on a balanced point. The forest gives priority to the spruce and larch, which could grow well in the area where the average temperature is 16.9 Celsius degrees.
The altitude of this forest park is lower than the other areas in this place. As a result, the water from the other areas is able to flow into the streams and channels. Thanks to the dense forests, water is always found to break free from the bondage of the soil and form tiny and irregular streams. These streams, along with the swift waters inside the forest, become one of the sources of Luan River.
The forest is a botanic garden as there are 848 kinds of plants found there. Apart from the trees, flowers are the protagonists as they can present different scenes that vary to the time. In the spring and summer, the blooming flowers weave a colorful carpet and offer a magnificent scene.
The local administrative body began to build wooden cabins as restaurants or lodges in this forest. The cool and fresh air in this place has turned it into a good place for people from other places, especially Beijing and Tianjin, to avoid the summer heat and enjoy their leisure time. Green Cloud Lake
The lake is located to the north of Fengning County, next to the upstream of Luan River. This tourism site actually consists of Green Lake and Cloud Lake and it is an water-related resort that take 295 million yuan and four years to finish.
The resort boasts abundant of tourism resources. With the 3.5-square-kilometer water area, the lake has 70 million cubic meters of water and the biggest depth of 30 meters, allowing aquatic entertainment projects. It is not an uncommon scene that swans are found flying above or swimming in the crystal-like lake, integrating the charm of nature into the manmade projects.
Traveling the lake with a boat is an item you cannot miss, because there you can see the only “Waterborne Eight Trigrams” in the world. You can see the Divine Elephant Hill in the shape of running elephants, as well as the towering FiveCamel Park. In the lake there are two lone islands in different shapes. One is called the Dragon Island while the other one is called the Turtle Island. Their affinity to the water and abundance in trees and fresh air have made it an ideal place for resting and fishing.
What’s rarer is the newly found cliff hanging over the lake. The cliff looks like the face of an ape man. The local authority’s description says that the cliff could easily remind people of their ancestors and thus make people feel the primal force of this area.
   Lama Mountain
Lama Mountain is 28 kilometers away from Fengning. If you want to get to Bashang Grassland, you must pass this place. The main peak of the mountain is 1198 meters high. Most of the peaks of this mountain have steep sides, which are decorated with natural caves and manmade inscriptions. They rise straight up into the sky and is mixed with clouds and mist, giving a mysterious air. The stones and trees in the mountain also highlight the natural charm of this place, which is quite a supplement for the grassland.
There are also a lot of stone carvings on these cliffs, forming a “lounge of stone carvings”. One of the most impressive carvings sketches a Lama, which is also the source of the mountain’s name. The carving is 3.12 meters high and 2.72 meters wide. Below it are the words in both Chinese and Manchurian. The carving is 300 years old but its color almost remains intact as the Lama looks like a living figure.
There is a brick pagoda standing at the foot of the carving, which is commonly called the Tomb of Lama. There is also a Lama Cave on the cliff – also an explanation to the mountain’s name.

   Buddha Beads Cave
The Buddha Beads Cave is the premier scenic spot in Lama Mountain. It is a natural cave that is 500 meters in depth. Outside the cave entrance there are 18 stones in the shape of the beads. That’s the origination of the cave’s name.
Tourists can get to the top of the Eastern Peak of Lama Mountain from the cave. People in the ancient time believed that walking through the cave to the top of the peak could bring good luck and fortune to people. It is recommended that tourists can bring flashlights with them so that they could have a full view of the sights inside the cave.
There are many dents found inside the cave or the places around the cave. These are actually the marks of the glacier movement in the ancient time. There are quite a few areas in the world that would have so many dents of glacier movement found in the cliffs and peaks.
   God-hacked Rock & Knifed Rock
It is another impressive scenic spot in Lama Mountain. They are actually two independent rocks that face each other with nature-made slits from top to bottom. The rock on the right has a straight slit which looks like being hacked by a mighty person with an ax. Thus it is called God-hacked Rock. The rock on the left has a diagonal slit which seems to come from a knife.
In the legend, the slits of the two rocks came from the God of Thunder when he was pursuing a black dragon that had tortured local residents for a long time. Therefore, the two rocks were always considered to be the symbol of heavenly justice and carry the auspicious air since the power of thunder could cleanse the world of all its sins and bad luck.
The scientific research has proven that the slits of the rocks are nothing but the result of the water and wind erosion. Yet the two rocks still carry their mysterious air. Tourists arriving at or passing this place would like to stop and channel into the slit of the two rocks, which is just big enough for one person.
   Glacial Pothole Park
The No. 1 glacial pothole park in China stands on the top of Buddha Beads Cave. The glacial potholes there look like pots in different shapes. Scientists have found that the glacial potholes could date back to 2 million years ago.
These glacial potholes are strong proofs that the area of Fengning was covered by ice in the ancient time. The same things were found in Yellow Mountain, Lushan Mountain, Tibet of China, as well as Germany and Poland. However, most of the marks are found in valleys or riverbeds and quite a few places have marks found in the mountains. Thus the glacial pothole park has an unparalleled scientific value. Apart from the value for scientists, the dents caused by the glacier movement in the ancient time are still a sight to behold because of their different sizes and shapes. They are relentlessly reminding people of the power of the nature.

   White Cloud Cave
The White Cloud Cave is located to the west of Heishanju Village, Fengning County. It is also called White Cloud Valley and Sun-Facing Cave. It is actually a scenic area consist- ing of caves, peaks, valleys and temples.
The tourism experts have listed three temples, six peaks, nine scenic spots and 12 caves as the worthiest place to go. The three temples refer to Baohua Temple, Qingyun Monastery and Yinxian Monastery. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, both the Buddhism and Taoism were blossoming there. The two religious clans were getting along well with each other and sharing the incense and contributions from the followers.
The “Six Hills” include Brush Rack Hill, Side Wall Hill, Tiger Head Hill, Crouching Lion Hill, Watching & Roaring Hill and Cockscomb Hill. These hills get their names because of their shapes and each of them has its own legends. The“Nine Scenic Spots” are weird, unique, exciting, dangerous or mysterious – some of them have all the features.
The “12 Caves” are also good places to go. The White Cloud Cave is the largest one among them. With the area of 600 square kilometers, the cave could easily accommodate thousands of people. The Joy Cave is the highest one and people could have a distant sight from the cave entrance.
