Gathering of offshore gas fields and the accumulation of thermodynamically-formed hydrocarbons in the shallow basement can serve as an indication of the accumulation of valuable oil in the depths. They may also be a useful source of hydrocarbons. Shallow hydrocarbon exploration is characterized by the low frequency, high penetration and multi-channel seismic reflection data commonly used in exploration, with resolution lower than the critical resolution. However, shallow hydrocarbons can be rapidly, efficiently and cheaply explored using high-frequency, small-penetration, single-channel seismic reflection profiles. In unexplored offshore regions of the world, high-resolution seismic exploration can be an important and valuable exploration tool.
