The Target Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC) was founded in 1967 at the UC Berkeley School of Engineering to coordinate earthquake engineering research. The center’s research and public service programs, whose main objective are disaster mitigation, can be divided according to their objectives as follows: (1) to determine the characteristics and intensity of strong earthquakes; (2) to propose analytical procedures for estimating the potential for damage; (3) to improve design Methods and specifications required; ④ development of increasingly dangerous old buildings reinforcement measures; ⑤ collection and dissemination of information on seismic engineering. In addition to facilitating academic exchange in the field of seismic engineering, the center also provides training to students who pursue the program and enhances their teaching of members of the faculty. The work of this research unit is closely linked with the seismic stations, which is a parallel organization of liberal arts colleges.
