乙烯是一种植物激素,对果实成熟、落叶、落果、植株矮化、增加瓜类雌花数目等方面均有明显的促进作用。此外,它对橡胶胶乳产量增加也有显著的刺激作用。但乙烯是一种气体,应用上有很大的局限性,几乎不能在室外及田间应用。1969年,美国合成了一种能够释放乙烯的化学药剂——2-氯乙基瞵酸,为乙烯的广泛应用提供了可能性。商品名定为乙烯利(Ethrel)。
