Objective To investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin level, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Methods Serum levels of adiponectin were measured in 163 patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) and 124 controls (Con) by radioimmunoassay, and the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was calculated. Results The levels of serum adiponectin in MS group were significantly lower than those in Con group (P <0.05), while those in HOMA-IR group were significantly higher than those in Con group (P <0.05). Serum levels of adiponectin in MS group and Con group were significantly higher than those in Con group Male (P <0.05). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that fasting insulin was an independent factor influencing serum adiponectin level in MS patients. Conclusion Low adiponectin is associated with the development of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.
