Objective: To investigate the relationship between the severity of disease (including the clinical symptoms, the severity of airflow limitation, the risk of acute exacerbations) and body mass index (BMI) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Uigur. Methods: From January 2013 to June 2014, 110 cases of outpatients and inpatients with COPD were collected from People’s Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, First Affiliated Hospital of Shihezi University, First People’s Hospital of Kashi Prefecture, and their clinical symptoms, airflow Limited severity, and the risk of exacerbation were assessed by Spearman correlation analysis of the severity of disease in patients with COPD and body mass index. Results: The higher the COPD patients were, the lower the body mass index was (P <0.05). The higher the COPD patients were, the lower the body mass index (R = -0.673, P <0.05). There was significant difference in body mass index between COPD patients with different lung function classification and dyspnea classification (P <0.05). COPD patients with a higher risk of acute exacerbation, the lower body mass index, a significant negative correlation between the two (r = -0.461, P <0.05); high risk COPD patients with body mass index was significantly lower than the low risk group, the difference was statistically Significance (P <0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between the severity of disease and the body mass index in Uighur COPD patients in Xinjiang. The lower the BMI, the heavier the disease.
