Atrial muscle cells in the heart contain electron dense particles that are not found in the ventricle. The particles are about 0.3 nanometers in diameter and contain about 600 particles per cell and are similar to those found in secreted tissue. As early as 1960, Palade found that reserpine-treated animals had less particles in the atrial muscle cells, thought to store catecholamines in the heart. However, subsequent studies failed to detect any biogenic amines in these particles. Until recently, Adolfo de Bold presented a report on the role of this class of particles, indicating an increase in the number of particles due to dehydration or lack of sodium. Because the atrium contains fluid volume experience
