Objective To study the correlation between the expression of VEGF and nm23 and the microvessel density and the metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods Immunohistochemical technique was used to detect the expression of VEGF, nm23 and CD34 in 56 HCCs. Results The expression of VEGF in metastatic cases was significantly higher in 56 cases of HCC than in those without metastasis (P <0.01), while the expression of nm23 protein was significantly lower than that in non-metastatic cases (P <0.01) Negatively correlated with the expression of nm23 protein (r = -06498). The MV density in HCC tissue increased with the increase of VEGF expression, and was positively correlated (r = 0 63 2 4). The MV density of HCC patients with metastasis was significantly higher than that without metastasis (P <0.01). Conclusion The results suggest that VEGF overexpression and nm23 low expression or no expression may promote the occurrence of HCC metastasis. Detecting the expression of VEGF and nm23 protein and MV density may be used as a reference index to judge the prognosis of HCC.
