OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of two elements on the growth and development of neonates by using cord blood arsenic and selenium levels as indexes. Methods: A total of 213 full-term newborns born in this hospital were selected as the research object, neonatal umbilical cord blood was collected and cord blood arsenic and cord blood selenium were measured. Results: There was no significant correlation between umbilical cord blood arsenic levels and neonatal body weight and body length (body weight: r = -0.031, P = 0.682; body length: r = -0.082, P = 0.253). The level of cord blood arsenic was positively correlated with head circumference, the difference was statistically significant (r = 0.322, P = 0.000). There was no significant difference in cord blood selenium level with body weight and body length (body weight: r = 0.343, P = 0.062; length: r = 0.295, P = 0.081). The level of selenium in cord blood was negatively correlated with head circumference (r = -0.413, P = 0.000). There was a positive correlation between neonatal head circumference and cord blood arsenic levels (β = 0.08, P = 0.00) There was no statistically significant correlation with cord blood selenium level (β = -0.03, P = 0.31). Conclusion: Neonatal umbilical blood arsenic levels have a negative impact on neonatal growth and development, and trace element selenium may be able to antagonize this undesirable reaction.
