1940年10月,昆明郊区大普吉陈家营村杨家宅院,有一处偏房,租给了西南联大的一位教授。昆明郊区的众多所谓营房,实则是明末清初守卫昆明的兵营,随着历史的变迁,兵营散去,逐渐演化为一个个村落,陈家营就是其中一个。这处偏房以土坯构成,原是房东用来堆包谷和柴草所用,房间异常简陋,没有真正意义上的窗户,只是靠院子的一边,半截土墙上挖了一个小洞,一些参差不齐的柴火棍支撑其间,说不清是窗户还是栅栏。院子空间狭小,只有一个阴湿的天井,太阳尚未落山,矮小的土屋就被黑色笼
