The IETF protocol, Socks5, developed to ensure secure communications between networks, has been widely criticized for being functionally duplicated by some of the newer solutions, such as application gateways. Engineers from Microsoft, Intel, NEC, and Aventail are expanding the SOCKS 5 standard and consider creating a SOCKS 6 working group that aims to improve the management, logging, analysis, and performance of SOCKS standards. Meanwhile, Aventail plans to include some features of SOCKS 6 later this year in version 3.0 of its SOCKS client and service software, including UDP (User Datagram Protocol) / multiplexing support and aiming to provide easier configuration Feature discovery feature. The new SOCKS draft standard is expected to solve some of the tricky issues, including ensuring the security of multiplexed applications without going back to single-lane transmission; through a FireWire transport using the IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) method calls; and utilizing IPSec (IP Security Protocol) in a flexible way.
