A Frenchman, an Englishman and an American were boasting(吹牛皮) about how fast trains went in their countries.
The Frenchman said:“In my country trains go so fast that the telegraph poles(电线杆)along the line look like a garden fence(栅栏).”
The Englishman said:“At home trains go so fast that we have to pour(泼) water on the wheels(车轮),otherwise(否则)they would get white-hot and melt(熔化).”
“That’s nothing,”said the American.“I was once traveling in my country and my daughter came to the platform(站台)to see me off(送行). While I was getting into the train it started. I leaned(倾斜)out of the window to kiss her, and kissed a farmer in a field six miles away.”
An absent-minded(心不在焉的)professor was lecturing on anatomy(解剖学).
“To show you more clearly what I mean, I have here a parcel(小包)with a dissected(解剖了的)frog.I want you to examine it very carefully.”
The professor unwrapped(解开) the parcel and saw that it contained(包着)two sadwiches and a hardboiled(煮老的)egg. Astonished(吃惊),the professor said:“I was sure I had eaten my lunch, but where is the frog?”
Once, late at night, an Englishman came out of his room into the corridor(走廊)of a Paris hotel and asked the servant to bring him a glass of water. The servant did as he was asked. The Englishman re-entered his room, but a few minutes later he came into the corridor again and once more asked the servant for a glass of water. The servant brought him another glass of water. Every few minutes the Englishman would come out of his room and repeated his request. After a half hour the astonished servant decided to ask the Englishman what he was doing with the water.
“Nothing,”the Englishman answered imperturbably(不慌不忙地),“It’s simply that my room is on fire.”
