A comparative study of the effects of radiation on the purine nucleoside phosphorylase activity of erythrocytes using rats, mice and dogs as experimental animals. In vitro experiments using 9700 or 97000 rad irradiation rat and mouse heparin anticoagulant, erythrocyte purine nucleoside phosphorylase activity was slightly reduced, but in the overall experiment has the following different results: 1. Irradiation of rats with 400, 600, and 700 rads respectively decreased the enzyme activity. After the irradiation of 400 or 600 rads, the enzyme activity decreased to a level before exposure to a certain time, but the enzyme activity decreased and remained unchanged after irradiation with 700 rads. The degree of inhibition and recovery of rat enzyme activity after irradiation was related to the severity of radiation damage. 2. There was no significant change in enzyme activity after irradiating mice with doses of 800, 900, and 1000 rads. On day 1 after irradiation with 700 or 1200 rads, the activity of purine nucleoside phosphorylase in the erythrocytes of dogs decreased significantly compared with that before irradiation, and remained low for the following days.
