Since the mid-20th century, Hong Kong’s economic development has drawn world attention. Especially by the 1970s, thanks to the success of its export trade, Hong Kong has become a thriving commercial and financial center. By the 1990s, GNP per capita was already above that of Britain, Canada and Australia and became one of the “four little dragons” in the Asian economy. Along with the rapid economic development, Hong Kong’s health record is also commendable. The general hygiene standard of its residents has also reached the world standard. In 1995, the infant mortality rate in Hong Kong was 4.7 ‰, with an average life expectancy of 75.7 for males and 81.3 for females. After the return of Hong Kong to the motherland, the above indicators have further improved.
