自先秦以降,即有劳力—劳心之辨。就其发展大势而言,在中国历史上约略经历了三个阶段:一是旧石器时代和新石器时代的全民劳力劳心合一;二是跨入文明门槛至近代工业文明兴起之前的劳力劳心分离;三是近代工业文明兴起之后的劳力劳心在新的层面合一。而就人类文化史的大趋势而言,上述三个阶段经历了“合—离—合”的辩证历程,构成一个否定之否定的螺旋式上升圆圈。通常我们所说的“中国传统文化”主要指第二阶段的文化,此阶段创制了丰富的政治—伦理学说、雄阔精微的哲学思想、汪洋恣肆的文学艺术,然其蔑视劳力、忽略生产技艺的倾向愈演愈烈,有碍于第三阶段文明的创建。当下需重拾并提升第一阶段劳力劳心合一的精神资源,将其纳入“中国传统文化”的大系统之中,促进第三阶段文明的健全成长。
