苏教版高中语文必修三中的《品质》一文,是诺贝尔文学奖得主——英国作家高尔斯华绥的短篇小说。讲述的是鞋匠格斯拉为了做出完美的靴子不惜花费大量的时间,投入大量财力,最终却在工业化大潮的冲击下贫困而死的故事。主人公追求理想的执著精神,以及在制靴过程中体现出来的良好信誉,都给人留下了深刻的印象。在当前小说日益简化成欲望叙事,臣服于叙述一个好看的故事的背景之下,这个简单的故事也给我们造成了强烈的审美冲击。格斯拉的故事,很容易让我们联想到明初高启的《墨翁传》:
